How to Make a Simple and Effective Content Calendar

Overwhelmed by content curation?

I totally get it. Too often my clients feel totally bogged down by the idea of keeping up with a blog, social media, etc., while also just getting their day-to-day jobs done. Here’s the thing…while keeping the constant content game going isn’t easy, if you take some steps to help simplify it, it will feel significantly less daunting.

social media

It helps to think of social media as separate but united. When dealing with multiple platforms, it’s not wrong to share the same content on different platforms...it’s really not! You’ll reach different people on each platform. What does help, is you can think to do the bare minimum for each, especially when starting out. Not only that, but consider which platforms are best for you. If your target audience isn’t on Twitter…don’t use it!

You should post:

  • Facebook: 1-2 times per week

  • LinkedIn: 1-2 time per week

  • Twitter: Daily

  • Instagram Feed: Daily or every other day

  • Instagram Stories: Daily

Now, what should you be posting each of those times?

  • Facebook & LinkedIn: Blog posts or informative updates

  • Twitter: quick thoughts/images and links

  • Instagram: Images with thought-provoking captions and quick, easy-to-digest stories

the schedule

For this, I like to start by looking at the month as a whole. Then, I strategize the calendar around the blog content. (Don’t have a blog? Here’s why every business needs a blog.) Ideally, everyone should blog at least once per week, but even two times per month is great! Once you establish your blogging schedule, base everything else around that.

Once you’ve established your blog-sharing days, next just fill in with supplemental content. If it helps, think about some regular routines you can establish. Maybe every Tuesday you share a #TipTuesday post! Or maybe every Wednesday you share an employee highlight. Think about routines like that and by the time you have to fill in with true, off-the-cuff content, it will be much easier.

Feeling better?

At the end of the day, spending a little extra time to pull your content calendar together will be well worth it. The first time you do it will take the longest, but it gets easier as you go on!

And hey…if you still don’t want to do it, that’s what people like me are for!

Happy content creating, friends!
